Behaviour

Behaviour at St George’s – A Guide for Parents

Working Together to Support Your Child

Our Vision

At St George’s, we believe that each child is “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14). Our behaviour approach is built on positive relationships, clear expectations, and helping every child to flourish.

What We Expect

We have high expectations for all our children. We believe that positive behaviour needs to be taught, modelled, expected, and praised. We want every child to:

  • Feel safe, valued, and respected
  • Make positive choices
  • Take responsibility for their actions
  • Treat others with kindness and respect

Expectations for each phase

1. In EYFS, we focus on nurturing positive relationships, routines, sharing, and learning how to express feelings and make good choices through praise and personalised rewards.

2. In KS1, children are supported to develop independence, responsibility, and an understanding of how their behaviour affects others, using restorative conversations to help them learn from mistakes.

3. In KS2, pupils are encouraged to become positive role models who take increasing responsibility for their actions, demonstrate resilience, and contribute positively to the wider school community. Across all phases, we promote kindness, respect, and readiness to learn through clear expectations, restorative approaches, and close partnership with families.

How We Support Positive Behaviour

We celebrate success through:

  • Golden Tickets – given when children live out our school vision
  • Weekly prize draws – names drawn from class Golden Ticket pots
  • Certificates and praise – recognising effort, achievement, and positive attitudes
  • Class rewards – decided together by staff and children

We teach children to:

  • Understand the impact of their behaviour on others
  • Reflect on their choices
  • Make things right when mistakes happen
  •  Learn from their experiences

When Things Go Wrong

We understand that children are still learning and sometimes make mistakes. When behaviour falls below our expectations we use restorative approaches:

  • Children reflect on what happened and how it affected others
  • They consider how to make things right
  • We work together to prevent it happening again
  • Parents are informed and involved

For serious incidents:

  • Parents will be contacted immediately
  • The incident will be recorded on our safeguarding system (CPOMS)
  • Appropriate consequences will be applied
  • Support will be put in place to help your child

Non-Negotiable Behaviours

Some behaviours are never acceptable and will result in immediate consequences:

  • Physical or verbal aggression
  • Racist, sexist, or homophobic comments
  • Swearing or rudeness to adults
  • Deliberate damage to property

These incidents will always be reported to parents and may result in time with senior leaders, internal exclusion, or fixed-term exclusion depending on severity.

How You Can Help

Please support us by:

  • Talking to your child about our expectations
  • Praising positive behaviour at home
  • Contacting us early if you have concerns
  • Working with us to address any issues
  • Modelling respectful behaviour
  • Ensuring your child arrives on time and ready to learn

Communication:

  • We will always contact you if there are concerns about your child’s behaviour
  • Please contact your child’s class teacher if you have any worries
  • We believe in working in partnership with families

Mobile Phones and Devices

We operate a no mobile phone policy for pupils. Children should not bring mobile phones, smart watches with communication features, or other devices to school. This protects children and helps them focus on learning and friendships.

Behaviour Outside School

We can address behaviour outside school if your child is:

  • Travelling to or from school
  • Wearing school uniform
  • On a school trip
  • Identifiable as a St George’s pupil

We will always work with you to address any concerns in a supportive way.

Safeguarding

We take safeguarding very seriously. Sometimes behaviour can indicate that a child needs additional support or protection. All staff are trained to recognise signs of concern and will always act in your child’s best interests.

Questions?

If you have any questions about behaviour expectations or would like to discuss your child, please contact:

  • Your child’s class teacher (first point of contact)
  • Claire Martin, Headteacher: 01527 62263
  • Email: [email protected]
